In 2015, Mehnaz Mahaboob and I represented Middlesex University in the first every Institute of Mechanical Engineers Design Challenge, facing opponents from other universities all over the United Kingdom. we were faced with the task of designing and building a device that would climb inside a 2.5m transparent tube lifting an increasing weight. It had have to lift a weight in the form of a 0.2 kg/m chain and then knock off a ball which was be balanced at the top of the tube. This device had to be made with a budget of £20.
Our final design met the budget with change to spare, having used as little material as possible keeping it relatively lightweight yet strong enough to hold and pull up the chain. Our design consisted of a wheel that was powered by a modified servo motor and two caster wheels attached to a metal ruler giving just enough tension to push the robot snugly along the sides of the tube. A toggle switch was mounted at the top of the device so that when the device hit the top of the tube, it changes the switches polarity which reversed the motors to go back down the tube quickly.
