As part of a live project in a team of three with Meliha Beglerovic and Taymara overbeck, we were tasked to create a system that would safely remove the sludge (a mixture of sand grit and tiny metal particles) that was produced by the resident water jet cutter at Middlesex University. Our system was based on the law of gravity, with our aim being to slow down the water mixed with the sludge using the grates, so that the sludge would settle to the bottom of the grates. The sludge would then dry into a dust-like texture, which could then be blown to the back of the system and drop down to the bottom grates. The grates would then be opened up over the cart, and once filled, could then be wheeled safely to the bin and the bag of grit thrown away.
